Video With Michael Johns Featured On The Ontic's - "The Great Divide"

Michael Johns co-wrote and does lead vocals on "The Great Divide - (theme from The Wanted)".  Two of Michael's best friends, Jeff Foxworth and Rye Randa, formed The Ontic and score for the new series "The Wanted".  The series begins at 10pm on NBC  Monday, July 20th!  Rye Randa's interview explains scoring for the series.  "The Great Divide" in its entirety can be downloaded from Amazon.com now, and is also available for download from iTunes!  Read the Rye Randa interview at the following link!

Rye Randa and Jeff Foxworth (The Ontic) Score For The Wanted!

Rye Randa Discusses Scoring For NBC's New Series The Wanted

In researching a story I planned to do about the general state of corruption I see in the music industry today, I've been engaged in ongoing conversions with someone I consider to be a musical genius. If you read "Rye Randa – Musician Extraordinaire" and subsequent articles I've written about him, you'll know the person I'm talking about and why I consider him to be genius.

Rye Randa, and those with whom he collaborates, continue to evolve artistically, ever taking music in new directions. He surrounds himself and his craft with people of similar musical brilliance; those that can understand the level of excellence required in writing and performing alongside him. I'll get to a couple of those other wizards a bit later on. Let me first set the scene for this interview by explaining how I got word of his latest venture.

Rye RandaAs already mentioned, I was researching an article regarding corruption in the music industry, a story that I planned make public at some time in the very near future. Rye was recounting a personal experience about one of those people who'd displayed questionable ethics and broken some promises. It was a story that I would've been more than happy to include in the piece.

Rye informed me that one of his friends at Dateline was also considering investigating the person behind his complaint. Hmm. Dateline is much bigger than me personally, and has endless resources at their disposal with which to do an in-depth investigation.

That doesn't mean I won't do the story, it just means I've put it on the back burner for the moment, and here's why. That story can simmer back there for a bit, and it might even work itself out, assuming the subject of that piece doesn't cook up some new excuse for not following through with an agreement.

By now, I'd been distracted by this new venture anyway. In the midst of telling me what happened to him, Rye landed the following bit of news in my lap, causing me to refocus my efforts and spread much happier news instead. Here's a quote I found smack dab in the middle of the evidence he'd been sending for the "corruption in music" story:

"On a more positive note, I wanted to let you know about a new series that Jeff (Foxworth) and I are scoring. It's called The Wanted and premieres July 20th on NBC. We're still awaiting confirmation on the time slot, but 10pm was the last I heard. We've branded ourselves as a producer-writer team called "The Ontic" and will be launching TheOntic.com very soon. This is a really exciting venture for us and we hope it leads to many more projects to come... AND, if that weren't exciting enough, Michael Johns (American Idol Season 7 finalist) co-wrote and sang the theme song for us! It's called "The Great Divide" and will be available on iTunes in the very near future. We're also shooting a music video this week, which will be available on iTunes as well."

Now Rye very well knows that if he gives me just a piece of news this huge, it has the exact same effect as switching on and personally jump-starting my question machine. I no longer take pity on anyone who is fully aware that I'll bombard them with questions when they share their news with me. However, he does still retain my unending respect and gratitude for his willingness to put up with the onslaught of questions from people like me.

I immediately went into research mode again, this time scouring the web for any information about NBC's series The Wanted, just so I'd have an idea of what type of program we were talking about, and what kind of questions to ask. The first mention of NBC's new series that I found on the internet was from a press release provided at National Terror Alert, a very heavy duty website. There may have been other sites that posted news of the series before this one, but this was as far I needed to look before finding out just how important the program will be into the very distant future.

The WantedThe Wanted looks to be the epitome in reality TV, focusing on the very real threats of terrorists and what it takes to track them down in the modern age. The series follows a former Navy Seal, a former U.S. Intelligence official, and an Emmy award winning journalist as they zero in on war criminals worldwide. For more information on the series itself, you can find it at their website or watch for the trailer on NBC.

As you probably know by now, I'm here to cover the music part of the show. The following questions and answers are what flew back and forth so I could deliver the full story of scoring for the series, courtesy of Rye Randa, one half of The Ontic, a.newly formed writer-producer team

After watching the trailer for The Wanted on Direct TV via a link provided by Jeff Foxworth, the other half of The Ontic, I was a bit confused to find another song being featured at the end of that particular trailer. I asked Rye if the theme song for the series was still "The Great Divide" or if it had been changed to Midnight Youth's "The Calvary". Here's what he responded.

"The Great Divide" should be available on iTunes any day now. It is still the main theme song for the show and will be used in most if not all NBC trailers. "The Cavalry" is a fantastic song by our friends Midnight Youth, which was used in the Direct TV trailer, and possible future promo, but not as the theme.

Can you tell me more about scoring for the series and how it differs from scoring films?

Well, as you would imagine, a series can be quite a bit more work than a film, just in the sense that there is a larger demand for material. Each episode is like a movie of it's own, requiring the same amount of content in a much shorter timeframe.

Where did you come up with the name "The Ontic"?

In short, the word "Ontic" means "pertaining to that which is real" or "having the status of real and ultimate existence". However it's meaning is a bit complex, and is open to many possible interpretations. That's why we like it so much! Since it's a word you don't hear very often, we hope people will be intrigued enough to look it up and come up with their own interpretation of how the word applies to us and to our music. Kinda fun right??

(Writer's note: He was right in assuming not knowing what the term "The Ontic" stood for would make people go and look it up. I did, before he could even respond. (Sneaky devil) The actual definition can be both as complicated as you choose to make it, and simple enough to be subject to individual interpretation. I like his description the best so far. I even found a website that offered "The Ontic Principle". Interesting stuff!)

Did being nominated for "Best Original Soundtrack" at the X-Games have anything to do with you landing the scoring job for the series?

As you may already know, "The Wanted" is co-executive produced by our very good friend Charlie Ebersol, who also produced "Don't Look Down" and "Ithuteng". Charlie, along with his brothers Willie and Harmony have always expressed their belief in us, and the work we do. So we hope this is just the beginning of a long and prosperous relationship.

When told the original video shoot for the video didn't happen that week, I asked what would it take to get the three artists to sit down in front of a video camera (preferably switched to the on position), record one of their jam sessions, and call it a video?

In fact, we just received word that they will be cutting a "Music Video" with footage from the show to use for promo.

Please tell me the video trailer they're doing for this will include the entire song. Is it being created to air on video channels like VH1 and MTV? Did they also tell you when we'll be able to see it?

My understanding is they will use it as a promo piece to advertise the show, but it will not a typical "music video" that you'd see on VH1 or MTV. My guess is that it will be a 60 second promo spot.

How long in advance do you receive the Episodes for scoring?

Well, in this case we did not receive any completed episodes before our work began. Due to the real-time nature of this show, the filming process has continued up until the very last minute (even for Episode 1). So although some of the music was scored to picture, much of it was created during the editing/ shooting process, before picture was locked. For particular scenes we would be given various musical references and ideas that would help point us in the right direction.

What additional duties does being "Music Editors" for the show add to what you already do?

As Music Editors, we're responsible for making sure all the musical transitions are smooth from scene to scene. We create what are called music "stems" that are broken down into various groups such as drums, strings, guitars etc. These separate groupings allow us to get very intricate with the edits and create the most seamless transitions.

Is the music being recorded in your studios or on the set?

At our studio.

What can you tell me about Ear Candy Music?

Earcandy is a music publishing company and library, and is the executive music producer for the The Wanted. The company is run by Harmony Lucas (Charlie and Willie's brother). Harmony is also the music supervisor for the show. He's not only a great friend of ours, but he plays an intricate role in making sure all musical needs are being met on time, and provides a channel of communication between us and the producers.

Since tracking down terrorists is the subject matter of "The Wanted", it has the potential to be an unending series. How many Episodes are you aware of so far?

At this time 6 episodes are in production with the potential for more. Of course, an "unending" show would be very nice.(he smiles)

Did the Ebersol brothers share with you their inspiration for the series?

I think the goal is to be of service to the world-community while creating compelling and informative television in the process.

How does the subject of the series inspire or affect the songwriting for the series?

Once you see the show you'll understand why there's no lack of inspiration. The subject matter is very serious.

Do you have the capacity to score for more than one series or movie at a time?

This project has been very demanding, and has taken a majority of our time for the last 8 months. However, we have taken on other projects as well. The bottom line is that we're very passionate and love what we do, so we don't mind working around the clock when necessary.

That passion and love for their craft is highly evident in every piece of music I've heard from these artists. "The Great Divide" theme song has smash hit written all over it! It fully captures the intensity, excitement and drama of what is certain to be NBC's new hit series The Wanted. The song is made of soul pounding classic rock in its most raw and exquisitely powerful form!

Jeff Foxworth and Rye Randa are the artists-writer-producers that make up the newly formed entity called "The Ontic". Collectively, they bring highly acclaimed experience in scoring to everything they create. These are the same guys, who along with Michael Johns (latest release story here), co-wrote and performed on the score for the Shaun White documentary soundtrack Don't Look Down - The Height Of Competition.

That brilliant soundtrack was nominated for "Best Original Music Score" at X-Dance 2009 for their excellence in artistry. Add to that bit of genius Michael Johns co-writing and laying down incredible vocals for the new single "The Great Divide", and you've got a smash hit on your hands! Look for NBC's new series The Wanted and trailer video coming out soon. The series airs on NBC beginning July 20th at 10PM!

I could apply many of the principles and definitions I found when I looked up the term "The Ontic" to this newly formed entity they've so named and created. At a website called Larval Subjects, the writer gives what he or she considers is "The Ontic Priciple". But before actually giving their thought on the subject, explains the simplicity of the principle in this way.

"This thought, though it will no doubt sound disappointing, almost banal, once I formulate it as a principle, was one of those moments where you feel as if you’ve been struck by lightning, blinded, or hit in the gut with a sudden philosophical idea where everything feels as if it’s being drawn together. Or perhaps again, it was the flash of a fundamental commitment, a drawing of the line, that you were trying to articulate all along."

Here's the theory that writer came up with:

The Ontic Principle: There is no difference that does not make a difference.

That principle, though simply put, is truly profound if you think about it long enough. Although I could apply that principle to the writing-producing team of the same name, I still prefer Rye's explanation of "The Ontic" as an entity. You'll recall he said the word "Ontic" means "pertaining to that which is real" or "having the status of real and ultimate existence".

My take on the description is even simpler than his. With the word "it" meaning any entity, and the word "is" defined as existing, I would define "The Ontic" in its most basic form as "It is". Or perhaps in this case, since it is the two talents combined who properly formed "The Ontic", it might be more appropriate to say "They are", although the combined entity in the end, is one.

You see? I told you the definition can be as complicated as you choose to make it, or as simple as I choose to use the thought process. In either case, I'm thankful "The Ontic" is real, ultimately exists, and by applying higher standards of priciples to the projects they champion and to which they lend their talents, they choose to make a difference in the world. It is the difference between excellence in artistry and the "it'll do" mentality of other artists too often seen today.

Their new single "The Great Divide - (theme from The Wanted)" can be heard and downloaded now at Amazon.com, and is now available on iTunes as well. Do yourself a favor and go have a listen. I bought mine a couple of days ago and quite honestly, can't stop playing it!

Now back to researching the other story. I'm better suited to telling about other people's experiences and seeking justice for them, than I am at providing philosophical thoughts or hunting down fugitives. I don't have the type of courage it takes to make the same difference the men on "The Wanted" make in our world. Instead, I'll stay at my keyboard and write of their courage, while I take solace in the philosophy that states, "There is no difference that doesn't make a difference."

Cheers and best wishes to those men who do have that kind of courage, and to "The Ontic" for making a difference in our lives.

Michael Johns Interview - New Album, New Single, New Management

Former American Idol Finalist Michael Johns Discusses Hold Back My Heart

At one of the absolute busiest times in his life, Michael Johns took the time to sit down and answer some questions for BC Magazine about his upcoming tour and new album.

The American Idol Season 7 Finalist is just one day away from releasing his debut album, Hold Back My Heart (Downtown Records); it drops Tuesday, June 23rd.

Michael's first single "Heart On My Sleeve" from that album, was the #1 most requested song at AOL Radio when they launched a Tweet Request only radio station, and is currently climbing Billboard's AC charts. Because the Tweet Request channel was only meant to stay live for a week, AOL Radio added the single to their Pop Idol and New Music First stations.

Although Michael is fairly active in the social media scene, finding time to keep up with him would take anyone to task. He's recently been spending most of his time traveling coast to coast doing radio tours and promotional concerts. He'll be touring the country with Brooke White (another American Idol Season 7 Finalist) beginning in August, then he's been asked to join David Foster and Friends on Tour in October.

How he made time for an interview, I'll never know, but I'm so thankful he cared enough to share the following answers with us.

How was putting this album together different from assembling your own (unreleased) records previously?

The most natural thing I've ever done. I mean it was seriously effortless to write and record. Great players and the songs came from the sky.

Is the songwriting process something you can describe?

Some people can but I can't. I just get in the room and let it flow. I try not to think about it too much for fear that the tap may stop running.

Do you have particular writing habits or rituals?

No, I just try to get in the mood of the song. I sometimes go months on end without writing a tune. I don't press writing I just let it come to me.

How did the opportunity to tour with Brooke White present itself? What are the advantages (or disadvantages) of touring with someone else rather than going solo?

We just really like each other and our sound has similar fans. She is one of my favorite singers around. I think people will hopefully enjoy what we do.

When you go on tour with David Foster and Friends in October, will you be doing the same songs you did on the CD (of the same name), or will you still be able to perform some of your solo music in support of your Hold Back My Heart album?

Some the same and also my own tunes. David has been such a support and really wants to see me succeed. He's the man and it was an honor to be asked, glad we could clear the schedule.

How important do you feel album art or shelf appearance is in drawing attention and sales to the album?

It's not my bag, but I love the artists that put it together, it really is amazing.

As you may know, I've written several pieces before about your work with Rye Randa and Jeff Foxworth for the soundtrack Don't Look Down, as well as your solo efforts. I recently noticed on your MySpace player that the record label is now Fontana South. Is there any truth to the news I recently got from a friend that you're no longer with TRP, and if so, who is now your management team?

TRP is no longer a label.

Just to confirm, TRP is still your management then?

No they are not. Michael Goldberg and Sanctuary are.

Can you tell us what caused the change in management and label?

Shit happens.

I've heard that your song "Dangerous" (not on this album) is going to be used in a film. Can you tell us which one?

Really hadn't heard…you tell me. (laugh)

There's a distinctly different flavor in music from each of the groups you've worked with in the past when compared to the new album. How would you describe the progression from when you first started in the music business until now?

I finally found me! It really is a dream come true as a singer to find your real voice.

Who wrote the storyline for your upcoming "Heart On My Sleeve" video, and why does it fit the song so well? (When can we see it, if you know?)

Nothing has been written in stone. I have a concept I think is cool but the director may have a way better idea.

Can you tell us about any behind-the-scenes projects your fans aren't aware of? (Like working with Air Supply for "Hold On", co-writing a song for Brooke's album, appearing on Hannah Montana, guest hosting The Today Show, etc.)

It's funny so many things get told to me in any given week. I try not to get my hopes up. It is nice, however, that different shows or clients keep wanting me to do things. Some work out, some fall through, but I'm having a great time right now.

We've seen your "Old School" and Christmas video "Please Don't Bomb Nobody This Holiday" with The Dan Band. Do you have future projects with The Dan Band you can tell us about?

Dan is a genius! I love him so much and whenever he calls to include me in his next hilarious project... I'm in.

What other artists or producers would you most like to work with in the future?

Dave Cobb, Dave Cobb, Dave Cobb.

To what or whom do you attribute your sense of humor, or are you just naturally gifted with wit?

Probably God. I mean doesn't everyone thank him? Kidding, look most Aussie's have a good wit; we are a relaxed people.

What guilty pleasure would most surprise your fans if they knew?

I love to watch horrible movies on my days off. I mean anything I know that will be terrible like Glitter or Ernest does something. (laughs)

Your name is associated to an extent with certain products (i.e. Papa Johns Pizza, Patron Tequila, Garnier Fructis, Chick-fil-A, etc.) even if those associations were unintentional. If you could choose any product on Earth that you would officially endorse (or to have sponsor your tour), what would it be and why?

Michael Johns' Chick-fil-A tour has a nice ring to it…so does set sail with Captain Morgan and Michael Johns.

When you were on American Idol, most of us weren't aware that in addition to being a fabulous singer, you're also an accomplished song writer and musician. Not that it matters now that you've made a successful solo career for yourself, but do you feel playing guitar or piano on American Idol would've made a difference? What made you decide not to play an instrument on the show?

Well. thank you. Look, I just never found the song I thought would work. I wanted to play INXS - "Never Tear Us Apart" acoustic, but I was told the song wasn't allowed. I think that song is as sexy as it gets to sing.

Having spent a number of years in the music business and suffering some unfortunate luck with a few previous labels going belly up or restructuring, I'm sure you've seen a lot of unscrupulous behavior, up to and including what I would personally consider outright thievery.

Now you've graced what most would consider is the world's largest music stage by achieving Finalist status on American Idol. That experience gives you a most unique platform from which to speak about the music industry in general. Any comment?

Look, Idol is so huge because the music industry has failed in the last eight years. People still love music as much as ever, but the industry thinks looks and age are more important than talent. Idol put an end to that. Introduced us to great singers we'd otherwise never know.

Quite honestly, I trimmed my list of questions down from over six pages of things I'd like to know about him, but I figured playing 20 questions with Michael Johns would be enough for now. After all, he's got a new album and tour to see about and I wouldn't want to keep him another second from doing that.

Between doing concerts, and promotional tours, and appearances on radio and television, Michael somehow finds the time to be both a music star and a husband. His wife of two years, Stacey Vuduris, is a star in her own right.

Well known as and interior designer, Stacey's design for Kristen Bell's home is currently being featured in a layout for the July issue of InStyle Magazine. You can find out more about her and see some of her work at her new website Stacey Vuduris Interior Design. I'd like to offer her my personal thanks for sharing some precious hubby time for BC Magazine.

Michael Johns can be found in the social media on Twitter, MySpace Music, and Facebook. He's done video chats on Stickam with over 6000 fans in attendance, all throwing questions at him at once. (Poor guy. No guarantees on how often he'll be doing that one.) He sends out telephone messages through Jamship, a service to which you can subscribe and receive weekly phone calls. For those of you who are into social media, be sure to go there and add him.

You can find his new album Hold Back My Heart on Amazon.com, iTunes, and stores everywhere starting June 23rd. His first single "Heart On My Sleeve" can be downloaded and heard on the radio now. You'll find Amazon.com links to most all of his music below this article.

You'll find him touring in August with Brooke White, and in October with David Foster and Friends. Hopefully, he'll come to a city near you. What you will not be able to find is somebody else standing on line in front of me to purchase his new album. Just listening to samples of all 12 songs, I already know, I must have this entire album to add to my Michael Johns collection of genius.

My sincere thanks to Michael for sharing his news and taking the time to do an interview. From the very first time I heard him say "It Can Happen" on American Idol, I somehow knew that it would.

Congratulations, Mate! It's happening now. Cheers, and my heartfelt best wishes for many more years of future success.

"Life Is Okay" For Michael Johns and Brooke White - The NARM Performance Video

NARM (National Association of Recording Merchandisers) held their 2009 Convention last week and was host to some of the best known names in the music business.  NARM is a non-profit organization devoted to advancing music by bringing together all aspects of the industry.  For deatiled information on what they do, please visit their site.

Michael Johns and Brooke White provided entertainment for the finale event and headlined individual sets as well as joining to perform their duet "Life Is Okay" for the first time since it was recorded for the soundtrack album Don't Look Down.   In addition to their performances last week, Daryl Hall and Johns Oates played at the Awards Dinner Finale, held on Wednesday, June 10th.  Here's the convention news of Michael Johns and Brooke White as it was published at the NARM website:
Photobucket

These two American Idol alums teamed up recently for the hit single “Life is Okay” for the “Don’t Look Down” soundtrack and will meet again on the NARM stage for the Awards Dinner Finale.
Brooke White turned heads during last season’s “Idol” by delivering breathtaking renditions of songs by the Beatles, Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond. After she sang Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” Simon proclaimed White to be her favorite “Idol” vocalist. Her new album, “High Hopes and Heartbreak,” will be released this summer. Randy Jackson plays Executive Producer on the album.
Michael Johns delivers blue-eyed Soul as it’s meant to be heard. His new album, “Heart On My Sleeve,” due in stores June 16, is devoid of the typical glossy veneer applied to most modern albums, but heavy on vibe. It has a Blues-Country feel, with swelling strings accenting the delectable Pop of the album’s first single of the same title.
Okay, big gig, but not so big on accurate journalism. Michael Johns' new album is titled Hold Back My Heart and it's due out on June 23rd. I'll give them credit for getting the name of the single right. "Heart On My Sleeve" from his debut album is available on iTunes and Amazon.com now!

To hear 30 second clips of all 12 song titles on the album, go to Amazon.com and listen today! If you can't wait to say you own the very best in music, you can pre-order the full CD at Amazon.com!

I was hoping for full videos of their performances last week, but this is what was posted on YouTube. Here's a collection of video clips from the June 10th performance.  This video does give you a taste of what to expect from both artists.

Brooke performs her new single, "Radio, Radio" from her debut album High Hopes and Heartbreak.  Michael performs "To Love Somebody" also on his debut album in addition to eleven original tunes, and finally the duet we've all been waiting to see.  Michael and Brooke sing the duet "Life Is Okay" from the Don't Look Down soundtrack. (an independent album produced by Johns, Foxworth, and Randa).

Don't Look Down Soundtrack Now Made Available To International Fans

Photobucket
Rye Randa, Michael Johns, and Jeff Foxworth.

As some of you already know, the Michael Johns, Rye Randa, and Jeff Foxworth soundtrack Don't Look Down featuring the Michael Johns/Brooke White duet "Life Is Okay" isn't available to fans outside the United States. Brace yourselves for this happy news!

Rye Randa is the hero to every international fan currently unable to download the soundtrack "Don't Look Down".  He's making the download available to all Michael Johns, Rye Randa, Jeff Foxworth, and Brooke White fans that don't have access to the soundtrack through Amazon.com or iTunes.

In an email I received today, he asked that I post the news of his gift. He's placed the soundtrack on his website and made it available for purchase there.
Hey Rebecca-

Wanted to let you know I've been getting quite a few emails from Michael's international fans, especially in Australia who have been very frustrated because they cannot buy the soundtrack.  For some reason iTunes and Amazon have only made it available in the U.S. (not smart on their part).  So until we deal with that issue, we have made the soundtrack available to the international community as a download from my website www.ryemusic.com.  Would you mind posting something in the forum, or wherever else you think would be appropriate?  Hopefully this will satisfy some of the fans who've been feeling neglected!

Thanks Rebecca!

Hope all is well.

-Rye

As always, it's my pleasure to share any words I get from him.  Enjoy the news, and for those of you who didn't have access before, enjoy the soundtrack as well.

Michael Johns Performs On KTLA!

Although it was originally reported from another source that Michael Johns would perform his new single "Heart On My Sleeve" today, it turns out that Michael preferred not introducing his new single that way.  From the video we learn Michael is going to the Grammy's on Sunday (Feb. 08, 2009)!  Well he should at least practice being there!  He's destined for walking tons of Red Carpet events such as this one.

There's another mention of the distribution deal with Sony.  I can hardly wait to learn all the details for the upcoming album release! (Now due out in April?)

Jeff Foxworth (MissFodus Publishing) is in the video too.  He accompanies Michael Johns as he performs the following song from the 98.7 Penthouse suite (aka Pre-Grammy SWEET!). Ryan Seacrest connection?

Thanks to Will Manning for sharing the video HERE!

A special thank you to MaJa K. for uploading the video!

Official Don't Look Down Soundtrack Art

Following up on the interview Rye Randa Discusses Shaun White's Don't Look Down published last week in BC Magazine, here's the latest breaking news. I received an email on January 9, 2009, in which Rye Randa followed through with his promise to let me know as soon as he had a release date for the soundtrack. He gave me the news that January 20, 2009 is the official date for the independent soundtrack release of Don't Look Down.

For those of you who missed the original interview (shame on you), here's a brief synopsis of what we learned:

The score for the documentary film is an independent effort from Rye Randa, Michael Johns, and Jeff Foxworth collectively. All three men are singers/songwriters and musicians. The soundtrack is on the (Three Rings Projects) TRP Records label, and was produced by Foxworth, Johns, and Randa. Distribution for the album is being done through Fontana.

The CD contains seventeen songs in total, eleven having vocal performances, and the rest Official Soundtrack Art for Don't Look Downexceptional instrumentals that range from acoustic, to electronic technical genius, and then stretch all boundaries into soul thumping rock.

Michael Johns (American Idol Finalist Season 7) does vocals on ten of the songs, and Rye Randa sings "View From Up Here", the closing song for the ESPN Shaun White documentary film Don't Look Down. Jeff Foxworth puts his signature style of playing guitar on the tracks, and sings backup harmonies on some selections.

News of the soundtrack quickly traveled through blogs such as Love Me Two Times, and then stretched into forums like IDF and Michael Johns Fan Site before spanning the entire Internet with headline news of the story. Since the interview was first published here at blogcritics.org on January 6, there have been almost daily updates surfacing through news as it happens reports.

It seems the more we find out about the soundtrack, the more we want to know. Here's what I've learned since news of the DVD release was published last week.

In a forum post made by BlueMonday on January 7th, Don’t Look Down was listed on the X-Dance roster and scheduled to be shown at the festival on January 18. This news fueled speculation that Rye, Michael, and Jeff might make an appearance at the event to perform songs from the soundtrack.

The next day, an ESPN news release entered the forum with credit going to BlueMonday for the exceptional find and posting the press release at Micheal Johns' message boards. Details within that article informed us there are three video-highlight reels on the DVD.

On January 9, I got the official release date in an email from Rye Randa, and took the announcement to the aforementioned blog and forums. News that good can't wait to be shared amongst fans that frequent those sites daily in search of any tidbit of information we can find about future music releases.

Within just a few hours of that announcement, the song list and link to Amazon.com was posted at Michael Johns' message boards by MaJa K, who'd gotten the link from OregonMJFan. As you can see, news travels at light speed amongst the fans and fan sites. By January 12, news had spread to mjsbigblog and American Idol forums too.

For answers to the latest round of inquiries caused by the newly surfacing stories, I went back to my original source to find out the details. Although Rye has always been courteous in his responses, I'll have to admit I was a bit reluctant in sending questions again this soon after his last interview. I jokingly reminded him that he'd put the phrase 'Talk soon' in one of his email responses, and then sent him the questions anyway.

Rye in his usual prompt and gracious manner responded within a couple of hours to my note. The man continues to impress me with his complete dedication to courtesy and professionalism. He replied, "No problem. Happy to oblige."

When I asked if the soundtrack will also be released in hard copy, in addition to the digital downloads on Amazon.com and on iTunes, he responded, "Yes, hard copy via Amazon, and digitally through iTunes and most all digital outlets."

I told him about the ESPN news release that announced the three music video highlight reels on the DVD. Then I asked if he, Michael, and Jeff were in the videos at all, or if they planned to make any videos for the songs.

He said, "There have not been any videos produced with Michael, Jeff or myself. If there are any video "reels" on the DVD, they are most likely just clips of Shaun put to our music."

My final question to him was whether or not the January 18 appearance at the X-Dance had been confirmed.

His answer was, "No, not yet. But at this point, given the time frame, it will be difficult to pull off."I finished the email, laughing as I gave him a word of advice at the end. I told him writers tend to take words like "Talk soon" literally.
Now, a bit more about the soundtrack and music itself. This album contains numerous songs that are single worthy in quality, and could easily stand on their own. It's an album I'd buy if I heard the songs on the radio instead of hearing them with the film.
I wouldn't associate most of the music with a sports documentary if I'd heard them separately first. They're not the typical soundtrack tunes that you might expect on a film made about an Olympic snowboarding champion. However, with that being said, when you listen to the music while watching the DVD, the songs fit the ever changing moods of the film perfectly.
If you haven't heard any of the tunes yet, you can listen to sample tracks of all seventeen songs by clicking on the Amazon album below and judge the songs yourself. I can tell you already this will be one of my all time favorite albums just from the pieces I've heard so far.

The album has a soulful southern rock vibe on several tracks that will quicken your pulse with a throbbing beat and will rock you to your core. Other songs are mystical and airy, reminding the listener of the heights reached both in the mountainous elevations of the X-Games, and the breathless concentration of an athlete who was striving to attain competitive perfection.

There are acoustic instrumentals that showcase the talent and genius of the musicians who so easily change directions with sounds that range from heart pounding excitement to flowing smoothly into softer moods and philosophical reflections. "River Of Life" which was first done for a documentary titled Ithuteng is included on the soundtrack as well.

Here's an excerpt from a previous interview with Rye that gives the background of this most special song. In the piece Rye Randa - Musician Extraordinaire done for BC Magazine back in October of 2008, Rye explains how he and Michael Johns created the song. This was the question.
It is also rumored that you helped Michael Johns with the "River Of Life" project. Are there any details that you would like to share about that collaboration?

Yes, I produced, engineered and played bass on that song. We recorded it for a documentary film called Ithuteng about the South-African Ithuteng Trust School for young teens that have basically been failed by the system in the post-Apartheid region of Soweto. One of the students, Lebo Kgasapane (the singer on "River of Life") passed from AIDS before the film was completed. We literally built the song around a short audio clip of Lebo that was recorded during the filming process (this is the actual voice you hear in the song). It was quite a touching experience for all of us. It was also a really wonderful experience to record the Dorsey High School Choir at Hollywood Sound. Those kids are very talented.
That song along with the experience they gained by scoring music for documentaries might be the subject of a future article. There is one thing I can tell you for certain where this reporter is concerned. As long as these three men continue making music, I'll keep reporting the news of it to you. The next major event I'm aware of is Michael Johns single release in February, and debut album release, which is reported to be in March. You'll get that news just as soon as I have the official release dates and titles for the much anticipated and long awaited music.
There will be those of you whose primary interest in Don't Look Down will be the X-Games and behind the scenes look at Shaun White's story. I would suggest you should purchase the DVD. However, keep in mind you won't be getting the full versions of the music or the five additional bonus tracks that are included on the soundtrack.

Photobucket

For those of you who simply must have exceptional music in your collection, this soundtrack has everything that you've been looking for and more. Please keep in mind when you order, that the hard copy is only available through Amazon.com. All other outlets will be offering digital downloads only. And lastly, for those of you who are both avid sports and music fans like me, you'll find a way to buy the soundtrack and the DVD just because you can't stand the thought of not having them both.

Now you have the full story that goes along with the Don't Look Down soundtrack. That is, you have the full story barring of course, further questions from forum members. I'll be back with any other news or announcements the three artists might have hidden in the wings.

Now if I could just talk the guys into doing a few videos to go along with the songs, my Don't Look Down mission would be complete.

Until next time, enjoy the soundtrack and DVD.

Interview: Rye Randa Discusses Shaun White's Don't Look Down

Rye Randa, Michael Johns, & Jeff Foxworth

The long awaited and much anticipated New Year is finally here. I've been biding my time for months now so I could make the announcement that Rye Randa (Singer/songwriter/producer), Michael Johns(American Idol Finalist), and Jeff Foxworth (Missfodus Publishing) fans have all wanted to hear. The three artists have teamed up to do the soundtrack for Shaun White's documentary DVD Don't Look Down, which will be released on January 6, 2009.

I spoke to Rye back in October of 2008 in an interview article first published here at BC Magazine titled "Rye Randa – Musician Extraordinaire". Although we heard about the soundtrack for the film then, there were many questions that couldn't be answered at the time. Rye most graciously allowed me a follow up interview to answer the details we've all wondered about regarding the new documentary soundtrack.

They say all good things come to those who wait, but this news is so much better than good. Your patience is about to be rewarded in full, so I'll go straight to the interview.

Be sure to keep reading when this bit is done to find out the rest of the ongoing threesomes antics and future plans. There are a few must see videos I'll tell you about before we're through. Without further adieu, here's the news of the soundtrack and what to expect straight from Rye Randa himself.

You mentioned in our previous interview that the soundtrack would include additional songs not heard on the documentary. How many additional songs are on the soundtrack?

Five additional songs. 17 total.

Is the soundtrack being done as an independent project or is it only included as part of the DVD?

It is being distributed separately by Fontana Distribution, and will also be available on iTunes.

So the DVD and Soundtrack can be bought individually?

Yes separately.

I know Michael Johns has recently announced that his management is TRP (Three Ring Projects) and he's released his first single "Another Christmas" on the TRP label. It's my understanding they also distribute exclusively through Fontana. Is the Don't Look Down soundtrack being put on the TRP Label and under your production company?

Yes it's a Three Ring Projects release, distributed by Fontana, and produced by Foxworth, Johns, Randa.

Do you have an actual release date for the soundtrack?

Not a solid date as of yet, but I'll keep you posted.

On the video, we hear just pieces of some songs. Will the full songs be on the soundtrack?

Yes, the full, re-mastered songs will be on the album.

Some of the songs featured in the film were done with you singing, and some with Michael Johns singing. Did Jeff Foxworth take lead vocals on any of the songs?

No, but I think he sang some background vocals here and there.

How many songs were done with each of you featured on lead vocals?

Michael sings lead on all but one of the vocal songs (10 total including bonus). I sing lead on the end-credits song "View From Up Here".

You mentioned in our last interview that you might perform with Michael at this year's X-Games. Has that been confirmed yet, and if so, what date?

Not confirmed yet, but we may be performing at X-Dance in Park City. January 18 is the date that has been discussed, but not confirmed as of yet.

Although it hasn't been announced anywhere yet, we've seen Jeff Foxworth performing with Michael at most of his post-idol television appearances. Have you heard whether or not they will be touring together, and are you considering touring with them?

As far as I know Michael has not assembled his touring band yet, but I'm sure I speak for both Jeff and I by saying we'd be honored if asked. At that point it really just comes down to scheduling as to whether or not we'd be able to do it.

Official Soundtrack Art

Now, I've spent countless hours at forums and websites discussing and speculating with the other members as to what we fans should expect from the musical score of a documentary film. We've waited and wondered patiently just to hear news of a single from Michael Johns, currently scheduled for release in February.

I can barely contain my excitement to hear how these guys have teamed up to provide for us so much more than we ever dared hope for. The photo at left is the Official soundtrack art, thanks once again to Rye.

It's almost as if the artists have known all along, we fans couldn't wait until February or March for new music.

They must be grinning from ear to ear as they're thinking, "Oh you want news of a single? How about a full album instead?"

Believe me gentlemen, we'll gladly take it! That should hold us over for another month or so until one of you (Michael) delivers your much anticipated single to the radio. Make some appearances and record a few of those so we have videos for the Don't Look Down soundtrack while we're waiting, and that should tide us over until March for the debut album release.

Just the thought of seventeen full tracks of original music on this soundtrack seems too good to be true. And to hear that these huge talents might perform together again, either on tour or at the X-Dance for the X-Games just blows me away. If you've seen the documentary as it aired on ESPN, you already know what portions of the score will sound like. If you haven't heard it, let me offer you a taste of what to expect.

To do that, I'll have to paint the backdrop for the documentary film. Some of you may not know of Shaun White, assuming of course that you've lived your life in a cave. Since 2002, he's won a total of 9 Gold, 3 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals snowboarding Slopestyle and Superpipe at the X-Games.

Then in 2006, he gained worldwide fame as we watched him win Olympic Gold in Men's Halfpipe. The film Don't Look Down treks his journey through the year following his Olympic success. What does someone whose won the ultimate prize in snowboarding go after next? I could tell you, but that might spoil the film. In a word, the answer is "More".

This DVD not only takes you to the frigid slopes and halfpipes to see all the action, it's also a behind the scenes look at the heart of a champion. It's a must see film for anyone who has ever aspired to greatness. Snowboard and skateboarders of all ages will be glued to the screen in awe of this unparalleled athlete's accomplishments. The closest most of us will ever come to his sport is playing his video game, but that's another subject for another day.

Now back to the music I promised to tell you about. As if what you see on the screen isn't enough to keep your attention, the music itself will take you through every imaginable emotion. The tracks vary from easy rocking while rolling down the road in his travels, to pulsing heart throbbing anticipation of what aerial maneuver he might try next.

The music flows perfectly and accentuates what you're watching on the film, but it's the songs themselves, seventeen full tracks entirely re-mastered that have captivated my full attention. These incredible musicians delve in from every possible angle. There are no other artists but these who can so quickly capture the ever changing moods of the film more effectively. At least, there are none that I'm aware of.

To Michael Johns, Rye Randa, and Jeff Foxworth fans I have but one thing to say. These guys have truly scored magnificence in sounds worthy of much more than gold. You can get your copy if you get in line right behind me. All I needed to hear were the pieces and snippets of songs on the DVD to know I'll be buying this soundtrack the very instant it goes on sale.

I'll be back again with more news of Michael Johns single and CD release just as soon as the dates and titles are known.

Now for the videos I promised to tell you about. For those of you who enjoy a good laugh (even though Christmas is over), you can still view Rye Randa's video "Round Again" at the original site Funny or Die, or as posted with the short article I wrote at Love Me Two Times. The video quickly made the rounds again at the IDF forum and Michael Johns Fan Site as well. Giggles and grins were everywhere showcasing Rye's quiet humor.

You can also watch Michael Johns and Jeff Foxworth as they performed "Another Christmas" at Access Hollywood. As you already know if you read the story featured in the BC 2008 Holiday Special - Spirit of the Holidays, all the proceeds will be given to charity for ALS and Red Cross.

The song is still available for download on iTunes and Amazon.com although the season of giving has passed. Christmas comes only once a year, but knowing your ninety-nine cents might be all that's needed to finally discover the cure for this catastrophic disease, could last you a lifetime. This video is just too good not to share it again.

I hope this New Year continues with as many good things as it’s starting off with. Cheers to you all until I have more good news to share. Hopefully, that will be really soon.
